Institutional Effectiveness Plan: Accounting

Mission:

To provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary for employment and growth in the accounting profession

2009-2010 Assessment Outcomes & Use of Results

College Goal: Develop and implement instructional programs and services,both traditional and distance learning offerings, consistent with the assessed needs of the constituent groups in the College's service area and with state and national standards, including training and retraining of the workforce.
Division Goal: Provide credit and non-credit programming to enhance economic development of the service area.
Department Goal: Offer additional on-line accounting courses necessary for program completion.
Objectives: Enhance program by making classes more convenient: increase enrollment.
Action Plan:
  • ACC129 Individual Income Taxes and ACC220 Intermediate I, be added to the online offerings for accounting students. Courses will be added to the schedule during 2009-10 academic year.
  • Complete MCC Distance learning course request form and set up ACC129 & ACC220 on-line courses to add to the schedule offering for Fall/Spring 2009-2010.
Assessment Strategy: Courses will be offered on-line during 2009-2010 academic year. Check for increase in enrollment after courses are offered.
Assessment Outcomes: ACC220 is up and running, Adding ACC129 not accomplished, Accounting Program head retired prior to completion.
Use of Results: ACC220 on-line course running spring semester 2010. Will reassess time frame for adding ACC129 as on-line section.

Department Goal: Make available to potential employers the resumes of 2010 Accounting graduates.
Objectives: Improve awareness of Accounting graduates.
Action Plan:
  • Obtain space on MCC Web Page for resumes and advertise availability of same.
  • Get resumes of targeted accounting students from OST286 class.
  • Get permission from student to publish the resume and review resumes and assure security of student information.
  • Allow resumes to be available for two years after graduation and allow updates and changes, approved by MCC for up to two years.
Assessment Strategy: Reviewed and enumerated resumes made available to employers on MCC Web Page.
Assessment Outcomes: Not accomplished, Program head retired, will reassess.
Use of Results: Will reassess plan.

Department Goal: Recruit students to MCC Accounting program.
Objectives: Increase number of students enrolling in the Accounting program by 10%.
Action Plan:
  • Get one success article written in the local newspaper about an Accounting graduate student.
  • Coordinate with Riley Beaman to attend viable recruiting activities at local high schools.
  • Offer a $25 award to one graduating student each from East & West Montgomery High Schools who is first to correctly complete a questionnaire about MCC and the Accounting program.
  • Preparation of a questionnaire (Program Head, PIO, VP Student Services).
  • Promote to Business Administration students that only five or six additional courses would be required for an Accounting major. (ACC129,140,150,220,225 & BUS225)
Assessment Strategy: 10% Increase in Accounting program enrollment, newspaper article published about successful Accounting graduate, attendance at recruiting activities, awarding of two $25 prizes.
Assessment Outcomes: Business Administration majors are being advised of small additional course requirement to obtain Accounting degree. Recent Accounting Degree graduate featured on Billboard advertising MCC student success. Some of the action plan not accomplished due to Program head retiring.
Use of Results: To determine effectiveness of strategy, higher number of accounting students will allow better promotion of program. Will be continued until July 2011.

Program Goal: Hire Program Head for Accounting program
Objectives: Secure replacement for retiring Program Head (Spring 2010)
Action Plan:
  • Advertise open position with job description and form search team.
  • Review resumes received and select candidates for interviews.
  • Interview candidates and narrow down to three acceptable names.
  • Present the above three with a recommendation of the top one to Dr Kirk.
Assessment Strategy: Program Head will be hired in Spring of 2010.
Assessment Outcomes: Mike Bowyer selected as Accounting Program head; to serve as both Accounting & Business Administration program head.
Use of Results: There has been an uneventful transition, no noted issues.

Division Goal: Provide credit and non-credit programming to enhance economic development of the service area.
Program Goal: Increase the number of students enrolled in accounting program classes while providing viable program opportunities for the growing number of unemployed/underemployed citizens of service area.
Objectives:
  • Increase the number of on-line accounting courses, eventually all of program available on-line.
  • Expand program offerings to increase total number of accounting program enrollment.
Action Plan:
  • Develop course Blackboard supplements for student use (reduce paper).
  • Develop and implement Accounting certificate options.
  • Coordinate with Riley Beaman to attend viable recruiting activities at local high schools.
  • Promote Accounting Program in MCC marketing activities.

College Goal: Provide an environment that supports employing and retaining a quality faculty and staff and promotes enhanced student learning, achievement, and development in a global society.
Division Goal: Provide access to and guidance in professional development opportunities to strengthen instructional delivery and to prepare for accreditation initiatives.
Program Goal: Increase instructor’s knowledge of certified subject matter.
Objectives:
  • Instructor able to teach all Accounting program classes.
  • Program head maintain CPA license.
  • New accounting developments (standards, rules) included in coursework.
Action Plan:
  • Attend accounting seminars on new developments in accounting.
  • Find resources for latest information on direction of accounting (IFRS, NCACPA, AICPA).
  • Add visuals (videos, handouts, etc) to accounting courses.
  • Include new topics in student testing.

  • Utilize technology to provide information services that support quality, personalized instruction.
  • Provide facilities for student learning that capitalize on state-of-the-art instructional applications.
Division Goal: Provide facilities, staffing and services that support educational program delivery.
Program Goal: Implement technology into accounting program.
Objectives:
  • All accounting courses will incorporate latest available technology in classroom delivery.
  • Offer accounting courses in classroom utilizing technology.
Action Plan:
  • Find/incorporate assignment software (homework management) for classes.
  • Course supplements that are technology driven (Blackboard).
  • Move classroom meeting place to lab-type location.
  • Decrease paper usage 10%.
