Institutional Effectiveness Plan: Computer Information Technology

Mission:

The mission of the Computer Information Technology program is to provide students a foundational program of study and practice that enables them to pursue careers in the field of computer technology. The department seeks to achieve this mission by three objectives. The first objective is to impart knowledge and skills needed in an ever changing world of technology that qualifies them for entry level positions. The second objective is to provide opportunities for students to develop their abilities to think critically, and reason logically. The third objective is to nurture students and help them in job placement and/or prepare them for four year institutions. For students taking computer information technology courses outside the program, it will provide instructional programs and services that meet the needs of other curriculum programs.

College Goal: Develop and implement instructional programs and services, both traditional and distance learning offerings, consistent with the assessed needs of the constituent groups in the College's service area and with state and national standards, including training and retraining of the workforce.
Division Goal: Provide facilities, staffing, and services that support educational program delivery
Department Goal: Update instructional materials for new curriculum courses
Objectives: Educate students about the training aspect of user support
Action Plan:
  1. Load Camtasia Studio software on lab computers
  2. Create instructional materials for CTS 217
Assessment Strategy: Eighty-five percent of CTS 217 students will be able to produce a satisfactory tutorial using Camtasia and PowerPoint.
Assessment Outcomes: 100% of students produced satisfactory tutorials using Camtasia and PowerPoint.
Use of Results: Student created tutorials were given to the Distance Learning Department, and they will begin using the tutorials during Summer 2010. Feedback from the Distance Learning Department will be used to create additional tutorials and/or improve current tutorials in the next CTS 217 course.

Division Goal: Provide facilities, staffing, and services that support educational program delivery
Department Goal: Update instructional materials for new curriculum courses
Objectives: Educate students about cutting edge software in web technologies
Action Plan:
  1. Load Dreamweaver software on lab computers
  2. Create instructional materials for WEB 140
Assessment Strategy: Eighty-five percent of WEB 140 students will be able to create a properly designed web page.
Assessment Outcomes: Based on current student performance in WEB 140 (as of 3/15/2010), it is estimated that 85% of students will be able to create a properly designed web site (digital portfolio).
Use of Results: Current students will be asked to provide feedback to the instructor if the portfolio assisted them in obtaining a job. The portfolio sites created will be used by future students to give them ideas for design and content. The instructor will also use the portfolios as examples to help future students create improved portfolios.

Division Goal: Provide facilities, staffing, and services that support educational program delivery
Department Goal: Update equipment in computer lab 142
Objectives: Provide technology that supports multiple configurations needed for various CIT/NT courses
Action Plan:
  1. Purchase 12 HP business desktop computers
  2. Remove current lab 142 computers and install new ones
  3. Set up configurations for various courses
Assessment Strategy: Fifty percent of the configurations (e.g., CTS 250 & NOS 230) will be set up if the new PCs are received by the end of November 2009.
Assessment Outcomes: 100% of configurations were set up because we received the PCs in October 2009. We decided to use virtual technology to make efficient use of the computers.

Configurations (virtual machines) used this academic year:
CTS 155 – Windows XP (MCDST)
CTS 250 – Windows XP, Windows 7
NOS 110 – Windows XP, Linux Fedora
NOS 130 – Windows XP (A+)
NOS 230 – Windows Server 2003 Enterprise

Use of Results: Virtual technology will continue to be used because it is convenient and allows us to run multiple operating systems without the hassles of dual-booting.  Dual-booting is not feasible anyway because of the number of operating systems setups required for the various courses. The new computers have greatly improved effectiveness of instruction. Students no longer have to share computers due to intermittent hardware problems.

College Goal: Develop and implement instructional programs and services, both traditional and distance learning offerings, consistent with the assessed needs of the constituent groups in the College's service area and with state and national standards, including training and retraining of the workforce.
Division Goal: Provide credit and non-credit programming to enhance economic development of the service area
Department Goal: Schedule GIS courses for certificate completion option
Objectives: Increase marketability of students by offering GIS certificate option
Action Plan:
  1. Coordinate with Forestry Management Technology Program Head to add courses to schedule
  2. Identify instructor for CIS 110 course
Assessment Strategy: Ensure that the courses (GIS 111 for Fall and GIS 121, GIS 215 for Spring) are added to the course offering schedules for academic year 2009-10.  Document number of enrolled students.
Assessment Outcomes: Courses were added to the schedules. GIS 111 was offered as a hybrid course in Fall 2009; GIS 121 and GIS 215 were offered as fully online courses in Spring 2010.
COURSE NUMBER OF ENROLLED STUDENTS
GIS 111 6
GIS 121 5
GIS 215 5
Use of Results: Although enrollment numbers are a bit low, we remain optimistic that these numbers will increase next academic year. The Forest Management Technology Program Head and the GIS Instructor feel that the demand for these courses will increase. This certificate will be offered again for 2010-2011. GIS 111 will be fully online in Fall 2010.

Division Goal: Provide credit and non-credit programming to enhance economic development of the service area
Department Goal: Expand CIT online/hybrid course offerings
Objectives: Increase convenience of CIT program for students by offering more online courses
Action Plan:
  1. Set up NOS 110 in Blackboard
  2. Set up CTS 120 in Blackboard
Assessment Strategy: Ensure that the two courses pass all standards on the Distance Learning Course Review Score Sheet: Reviewer’s Short Form.
Assessment Outcomes: To ensure that it meets the criteria for an online course, NOS 110 will be reviewed by the Director of Distance Learning/Faculty Professional Development in late April or early May 2010. CTS 120 will be reviewed during the Fall 2010 semester before being offered in Spring 2011.
Use of Results: NOS 110 will be complete by the end of this academic year. We cannot complete CTS 120 because a new book has been released, and all of the supplementary materials (Blackboard cartridge, online labs, etc.) are not complete yet. This objective will be carried over to the next academic year because of the CTS 120 course. Upon completion of both courses, the CIT curriculum will have a fully online certificate option.
