Institutional Effectiveness Plan: Criminal Justice

Mission:

To prepare students for employment in the Criminal Justice field, students will be provided with a fundamental knowledge of the local, state, and federal criminal justice areas

2009-2010 Assessment Outcomes & Use of Results

College Goal: Provide facilities for student learning that capitalizes on state-of-the-art instructional applications.
Division Goal: Provide facilities, staffing, and services that support educational program delivery.
Program Goal: To allow students to engage in hands-on activities within each Criminal Justice class.
Objectives: Students will have opportunity to become familiar with daily tools utilized in the criminal justice field
Action Plan:
  1. Purchase three digital cameras for evidence collection.
  2. Purchase field drug testing kits used upon immediate confiscation of illegal substances.
  3. Purchase 10 Crime Scene Investigation kits.
  4. Collaborate with Associate Dean of Arts and Sciences to incorporate class time for DNA lectures/lab utilizing the biology instructor and laboratory.
Assessment Strategy: Items purchased and implemented in classroom instruction. Classes scheduled in biology lab.
Assessment Outcomes: Cameras, NIK Instructa-Pac, and CSI kits were purchased. Collaboration with biology department will occur during Fall 2010.
Use of Results: Equipment will be utilized during Investigative Principles course in Fall 2010.

College Goal: Provide an environment that supports employing and retaining a quality faculty and staff and promotes enhanced student learning, achievement, and development.
Division Goal: Provide access to and guidance in professional development opportunities to strengthen instructional delivery and to prepare for accreditation initiatives.
Program Goal: For faculty to possess most current information and disseminate such information to students.
Objectives: Faculty to engage in professional development directly related to criminal justice.
Action Plan:
  1. Obtain class schedule from North Carolina Justice Academy
  2. Enroll in courses that directly relate to information which will be presented in criminal justice curriculum
Assessment Strategy: Professional development form submitted in June 2010, Information presented to students within class setting
Assessment Outcomes: Faculty participated in various professional development activities including legal updates, domestic violence response, and juvenile minority sensitivity training.
Use of Results: Information received in training was implemented into courses as appropriate.

Department Goal: Increase students’ knowledge of technology utilized in the field of criminal justice.
Objectives:
  1. For students to have access to computer programs routinely used in criminal justice.
  2. For students to gain necessary skills to properly use such technology.
Action Plan:
  1. Secure law enforcement software to accompany laptops previously obtained.
  2. Faculty receive training on using software.
  3. Students make use of technology during appropriate courses.

College Goal: Develop and implement instructional programs and services,both traditional and distance learning offerings, consistent with the assessed needs of the constituent groups in the College's service area and with state and national standards, including training and retraining of the workforce.
Division Goal: Provide facilities, staffing, and services that support educational program delivery.
Department Goal: Increase opportunities for students to engage in field experiences
Objectives: For students to gain firsthand knowledge of criminal justice practice
Action Plan: Design courses whereby students have out of class assignments including field trips and agency visits.
