Institutional Effectiveness Plan: Early Childhood Education

Mission:

The Mission of the Early Childhood curriculum is to work with children from infancy through middle childhood in diverse learning environments.

2009-2010 Assessment Outcomes & Use of Results

College Goal: Provide an environment that supports employing and retaining a quality faculty and staff and promotes enhanced student learning, achievement, and development.
Division Goal: Provide access to and guidance in professional development opportunities to strengthen instructional delivery and to prepare for accreditation initiatives.
Objectives: Early Childhood faculty will enhance their knowledge on current issues that affect young children in order to prepare graduates to respond effectively in the workforce.
Action Plan:
  1. Invite professional speakers to at least 4 courses in the program.
  2. Collaborate with professional agencies to gain information to share with students regarding current issues. These topics will include, but are not limited to childhood obesity and violence.
  3. Collaborate with other faculty in our department on campus in order to gain information. These may include Criminal Justice and Human Services.
Assessment Strategy:
  1. Signed information from guest speakers.
  2. Copies of information shared in class.
  3. Copies of emails or other correspondence with faculty and staff.
Assessment Outcomes:
  1. Guest speakers were invited to 4 courses.
  2. Students gathered information during a field trip to the Partnership for Children.
  3. Human Services Dept. shared information for one EC course.
Use of Results:
  1. Continue to invite professional speakers to class.
  2. Continue to plan field trips and share information with students.
  3. Continue to work with other departments in sharing resources.

College Goal: Provide facilities for student learning that capitalize on state-of-the-art instructional applications.
Division Goal: Provide facilities, staffing, and services that support educational program delivery.
Objectives: Incorporate “green” initiatives in planning instructional delivery.
Action Plan:
  1. Create a handbook to use in at least one course that could be reused in order to cut back on number of copies made.
  2. Create an online supplemental space on Blackboard for students to access needed handouts for class, instead of making paper copies, for at least two courses.
Assessment Strategy:
  1. Course Handbook completed.
  2. Information available on Blackboard.
Assessment Outcomes:
  1. Handbook not created. Materials made available online.
  2. Additional courses were offered as Hybrid and fully online with needed materials online.
Use of Results: Continue to offer classes as online, Hybrid, and also add supplemental materials online as needed.

Objectives: Early Childhood Program will study NAEYC accreditation standards and begin aligning program with these standards. (This is a continued objective from last year)
Action Plan:
  1. Program Head will study NAEYC documents.
  2. Contact other community college EC faculty to gain information.
  3. Create an Improvement plan based on at least one standard guide.
Assessment Strategy:
  1. Main points of document outlined and discussed with Lead Instructor.
  2. Emails and evidence of correspondence with other EC faculty.
  3. Written outline of plans for improvement.
Assessment Outcomes: Instructors revised course descriptions and competencies of 9 EC courses as recommended by the CIP committee to correlate to NAEYC standards.
Use of Results: Continue to revise course content to correlate with NAEYC standards as approved.

College Goal: Develop and implement instructional programs and services, both traditional and distance learning offerings, that are consistent with the assessed needs of the constituent groups in the College’s service area and with state and national standards, including training and retraining of the workforce.
Division Goal: Provide credit and non-credit programming to enhance economic development of the service area.
Objectives: Early Childhood faculty will enhance their knowledge on current issues that affect young children in order to prepare graduates to respond effectively in the workforce.
Action Plan:
  1. EC faculty will create a questionnaire to share with area child care centers in order to pinpoint specific areas of concern related to teacher education.
  2. EC faculty will participate in workshops, meetings, and/or phone conferences to obtain information related to the changing needs of the workforce community.

Assessment Strategy:
  1. Questionnaire completed and studied.
  2. Evidence of attendance in meetings. Notes from phone conversations.

Use of Results: Will be completed in May 2011

Action Plan:
  1. Plan a minimum of 3 educational field trips for students.
  2. Include off-campus assignments in at least 2 courses that require gathering information and/or volunteering in agencies and organizations that educate or care for young children.

Objectives: Assess and enhance current Early Childhood course delivery methods.
Action Plan:
  1. Create a survey for students to voice course method delivery preference  (class/online/Hybrid)  and suggestions for improvements.
  2. Meet with other instructors and/or IT staff in order to revise online portions of courses as needed.
