College Goal: Develop and implement instructional programs and services, both traditional and distance learning offerings, consistent with the assessed needs of the constituent groups in the College's service area and with state and national standards, including training and retraining of the workforce.
Division Goal: Provide credit and non-credit programming to enhance economic development of the service area.
Department Goal: Recruit highly qualified students into the Medical Assisting Program.
Objectives: Expand/duplicate course offerings to accommodate working and part-time students.
Action Plan:
  1. Offer MED 121, MED 122 and MED 118 as fully online as well as seated classes for first-year students.
  2. Offer MED 270 and MED 264 as fully online as well as seated classes for second-year students.
Assessment Strategy: Increase student enrollment and student retention.
Assessment Outcomes: MED 121 was offered as both a seated and online course. Student course evaluations of both the seated and online classes were positive. MED 122 was offered online only, as it is a continuation of MED 121. MED 270 was offered as both a seated and online course. There were no students registered for the seated class. Evaluations for this course revealed student concerns that have been addressed. MED 118 and MED 264 along with other MED courses will be offered in the coming semesters and will be scheduled as both seated on online.
Use of Results: Med Assist will continue to offer various courses, both seated and through distance learning. This flexibility in scheduling will accommodate working and part-time students, and increase student recruitment and retention.

College Goal: Maintain an on-going program that insures continual improvement and a high standard of institutional effectiveness, consistent with the expectations of governing and accrediting agencies.
Division Goal: Provide facilities, staffing, and services that support educational program delivery.
Department Goal: Actively pursue continuing and advanced education and to make the student aware of the importance of professional life-long learning.
Objectives:
  1. Promote the Medical Assisting profession by offering AAMA approved CEUs for CMAs in our community and surrounding areas.
  2. Attend AAMA/NCSMA seminar with students.
Action Plan:
  1. Work with Continuing Education personnel to develop approved CEU short sessions.
  2. Obtain administrative approval for students and Medical Assisting faculty to attend local AAMA/NCSMA professional seminar.
Assessment Strategy: AAMA CEU program approval.
Assessment Outcomes: The AAMA has not given approval for any CEU programs as of this writing. AAMA program CEUs are generally given through State and local AAMA Chapters. Montgomery County does not have a local chapter. AAMA members in our area are “members at large”, therefore, making such a request more labor intensive. Medical assisting faculty may look into the possibility of starting a local chapter.

All CMAs (AAMA) must remain current in the practice of medical assisting. Therefore, CMAs (AAMA) must recertify every five years. This can be done in two ways; retest or acquire 60 AAMA approved CEUs. By attending seminars and participating in other AAMA programs, we are able to earn CEUs towards our recertification. (Medical assisting instructors must be certified.)  CMAs (AAMA) are the only allied health professional that must recertify every five years in order to legally use the CMA (AAMA) credential.

By attending the NCSMA annual meeting, students see firsthand the AAMA organization in action at the state level. They are encouraged to participate by not only by attending CEU sessions, but committee and the NCSMA board meetings as well. Medical assisting students from around the state are encouraged to attend.

Med Assist faculty will be attending the NCSMA seminar in April 2010, but will not be utilizing local or club funds. Students may attend, but there will be no club compensation for attendance.

Use of Results: To ensure that medical assisting instructors remain current in the profession and maintain certification credentials as required by MAERB (Medical Assisting Education Review Board).

Introduce students to the professional AAMA organization.
