Each student will be responsible for bringing a variety of their own tools to include, hammers, punches, driver handles and bits, measuring equipment such as calipers and micrometers and all of the materials they intend to use for building their rifles. In addition to these tools, any student that wishes to build a rifle in a caliber that is not either 6.5 Grendel or .300 Blackout will need to supply their own reamer and headspace gauges. Other items would include drill bits for drilling gas ports, lathe tooling and end mills, that the college may not have or that may be in use by other students.

Optional tools that a student may bring are any AR-15 specific assembly tools such as lower receiver assembly block, upper receiver vise block and anything else a student has that they may feel will benefit them or speed their progress.

1911 Customization – Mike Watkins

It is recommended that you order your slide and frame with the cuts already machined for the sights and/or ramped barrel that you are going to use. Due to minimum build time of one week.

If you do not know how to operate a mill or lathe, “This will be required”.

We will not have time to teach you to be a Machinist.

Be sure you double check your components, Before Class; to be sure the frame, slide, barrel, and small parts are compatible with each other. A mismatch of parts will stop your build of your pistol.

spokeshaves can be used in the shaping of some stocks and are nice to have on hand. Veritas makes very nice spokeshaves and planes. Lee Valley sells Veritas. Contact me with questions.

Veritas sharpening guide (L, nice to have if hand sharpening is a challenge)

drafting compass/dividers     inexpensive compass from DollarStore, Walmart, etc. is fine.

Some additional chisels and gouges that are nice to have are:

(W)        05a22 12mm chisel

(W)        05v04 25mm chisel

(W)        05e05 18mm gouge #7 sweep

(W)        05g05   5mm gouge #9 sweep

(W)        05f03   7mm gouge #8 sweep

*Lee Valley Tools sells a really nice rasp that is hand-stitched in course, medium and fine cuts. They are called Auriou files. There are other rasps and files that would make your life easier but they add to the cost. A # 49 file is really all that is needed for this class.

**most metal-working files are satisfatory for finishing as long as serious removal of wood is not the goal however wood will ruin a file intended for metal fairly quickly. Smoothing and detailing files are handy.
