English as a Second Language (ESL)

Adult Basic Skills classes are offered for the adult who desires to complete studies for the GED or to review reading, math, and English skills. Instruction is available to the non-reader. Classes are offered both on and off campus. Instruction is individualized and students progress at their own pace. Several businesses and industries sponsor classes for employees. Before enrolling in a class, an individual must attend a Basic Skills Registration Session. Minors (16-17 years of age) may enroll in the program but need to obtain a Minors Release Form to be completed by a parent or legal guardian and the Board of Education before registering. All Students interested in the GED or Adult High School program may attend any of the following Orientation Sessions. If you are unable to attend one of the Registration Sessions, please contact Kathy Garner-Smith, Basic Skills Coordinator at 910-576-6222, extension 236 to set up an appointment.

Adult High School (AHS)

The Adult High School Diploma is offered through an agreement of affiliation with the Montgomery County Public School System in which Mathematics, English, Science and History classes are offered. Before enrolling in a class, an individual must attend a Basic Skills Registration Session. Students must also provide transcripts from all high schools attended to determine appropriate class enrollment.

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Students follow an individualized education plan and progress at their own pace as they prepare for the GED test or review basic skills to meet personal educational goals. Tutorial assistance is provided, materials furnished, and progress monitored by the instructor.

English as a Second Language
Ingles como Segundo Idioma
ESL classes are offered to help the individual whose language is other than English. The ESL classes are offered to help the individual whose language is other than English. The student works on words, phrases, and sentences necessary in an English-speaking community. As the student progresses, more advanced English skills are demonstrated in both reading and writing. As the ESL curriculum is mastered, the student is encouraged to continue in the Basic Skills Program leading to the GED. For more information call 910-576-6222, extension 249. All ESL classes are free of charge.
