BASIC LAW ENFORCEMENT TRAINING

Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is designed to give students essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county, or municipal governments, or with private enterprise.

This program utilizes State commission-mandated topics and methods of instruction. General subjects include, but are not limited to, criminal, juvenile, civil, traffic, and alcohol beverage laws; investigative, patrol, custody, and court procedures; emergency responses; and ethics and community relations.

Students must successfully complete and pass all units of study which include the certification examination mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriff's Education and Training Standards Commission to receive a certificate.

Acceptance into the BLET program is based on completion of all the program requirements. Class size is limited. To be considered for the upcoming BLET class, all admission documentation should be submitted by August 1. Acceptance into the program is provisional pending review and approval of the BLET Director.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must be a U.S. citizen

  2. Must be at least 20 years old.

  3. Must have graduated from an accredited high school or successfully completed the GED; an official copy of transcript(s) must be on file in the Admissions Office at MCC. Transcript Request Form

  4. Must complete Reading and Writing Assessment exam. NOTE: Reading Assessment score must indicate minimum of a 10th grade level.

  5. Must have a valid drivers license; a certified copy of your North Carolina drivers history report must be provided.

  6. Must have a sponsorship agreement; sponsorship letter must be on file in the Business Office prior to registration and remain valid throughout the programs entirety.
  7. Each letter must be on the department's letterhead; include your full name and social security number; include an original signature of the official sponsor.

  8. Must have a certified copy of your criminal history report for all counties & states in which you have resided since the age of 18; the report(s) must be approved prior to enrolling in BLET. You may not have a felony conviction; if you are concerned about your criminal history, please speak with the BLET School Director, Robert Lawing. (Some misdemeanor offenses also apply.)  Students are provisionally accepted pending approval of the report(s).

  9. Must have a physical examination form and exposure form completed by a doctor; the form must be on file at MCC by the first day of class. Students are provisionally accepted pending physical approval. Medical History Form. Medical Examination Form.

  10. Must interview with the BLET Director prior to enrollment; call Robert Lawing at 910-576-6222, Ext. 244, for an appointment.
Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Basic Law Enforcement Training program, the graduate should be able to:

  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of the criminal, traffic, civil, alcoholic beverage, and juvenile laws of the State of North Carolina
  • Exhibit an understanding of the laws governing proper use of law enforcement defensive tactics, firearm techniques, basic precision driving, and emergency first aid as a first responder
  • Conduct criminal investigations and traffic crash investigations
  • Demonstrate a basic understanding of a law enforcement officer’s interaction with victims, citizens, special needs subjects, and juveniles
  • Demonstrate proper law enforcement patrol techniques, felony vehicle stop procedures, and building searches
  • Exhibit appropriate skills necessary for case preparation, courtroom testimony, and courtroom demeanor
  • Possess entry level skills of civil process and custody procedures
  • Display the needed skills to handle crisis situations and domestic violence confrontations
  • Communicate effectively through oral and written formats
  • Exhibit professionalism and ethical conduct
